F&J Engineering Group was selected as the Prime Consultant for this Project that is the largest ecological restoration project in the Continental US. The sole objective for Next Step Phase II is to restore the natural flow to Everglades National Park (ENP) and Florida Bay increasing flow to Shark River to help preserve and improve the natural wetland environment. The project occurs in one of the most sensitive wetland habitats in Florida serving as the northern border of ENP. The park is home to an impressive variety of threatened and endangered species. This Project is made up of 3 Segments between SFWMD Structure S-333 at the western limits and east of Structure S-334 as the eastern limits for 11 gross mi. less the 2 completed projects (TTP1 and 1 mi Bridge) for 7 mi approx. The project includes the reconstruction of the existing two-lane roadway and shoulders; realigning and raising the profile of the existing roadway approximately two feet, placement of geosynthetic reinforcements for roadway and base reinforcement, utility coordination, construction of 7 drainage culvert crossings, 6 bridges of 60’ span each, construction of drainage swales and harmonizing the proposed roadway to adjacent properties and SFWMD canals within the project limits.
